Rain, rain, rain and then some more rain. We are well and truly in the trough and everything is soaking. The sky is a deep grey and the radar is full of activity although luckily the rain isn’t bringing too much scary wind and lightning. We are expecting to be out of it by the evening however every time a new forecast comes out, the trough has got wider and the wind has got lighter. We know that out the other side we will be entering a strong band of easterly winds and we find ourselves craving it. We start getting reports from ahead - the wind is there but approach before is a horrible lumpy washing machine sea-state. We enter into this at sunset and it is without a doubt one of the most horrible sea states we have witnessed. There was confused swell coming from all different angles and with no wind to drive the boat through, it made for excruciatingly hard hand steering. We reduced our watches from 3 hours to 2 because that was all our brains could manage. Although other boats had reported getting the wind at higher latitude line than us, we felt like it was nowhere near. When we managed to download the next weather it appeared that a giant wind hole had emerged directly above us. We were soaked from the inside out.

Let’s talk through the navigation plan at this point. The lynchpin in terms of navigation of this whole passage is our timing through a weather trough running across the middle of our crossing. It’s forecasting a big band of unstable weather including thunderstorms. Having had more than our fair share of lightning, it’s all about timing this correctly. With the light winds, a big part of this is ensuring we position ourselves in the right oceanic currents. If we can hit the beginning of it in the morning on Saturday, we should be through the worst of it in daylight hours in which lightning and heavy squalls are less of a risk. The status of the trough changes with every updated forecast but our plan more or less stays the same. Right now it’s all about maintaining the correct speed. Larry our autohelm has died of old age and no matter what fixes and solutions we try, he does not want to revive himself. On top of that we appear to have a problem with our charts not being able to contact the satellites. So as the sunsets on a crystal clear night the stars become our navigation points as we hand steer between the familiar constellations. 🪸The plan had been to spend a few days at Minerva Reef. We were looking forward to unwinding, exploring, and preparing for the passage ahead.
⛈️However, the weather had other ideas. We woke up the morning after we arrived and checked the weather to see that if we didn’t leave today, there was a chance we could be stuck there for quite a while.
⚙️Looking across the anchorage, it appeared that this consensus was widely shared, as dinghies were being lifted, sail covers removed, and wing foils packed away. ⚓️The mass exodus had begun, and exactly 24 hours after we had arrived, we were pulling our anchor up to leave again.
⛵️As a result, there was a whole fleet of boats sailing down together. While the vast majority headed west towards New Zealand, we and another yacht (Scout) decided on heading east to catch a favorable current and set ourselves up to be in a better position for weather further down the line.
👯‍♂️It was so nice sailing in such close quarters with other boats. We ate like royalty, with fresh tuna carpaccio for lunch and lobster linguine for dinner.
‼️There was just one problem... our autopilot didn’t appear to be playing ball.

JP manages to catch us two lobsters, and we enjoy a unique evening of cocktails and fine dining in this crazy part of the planet.

⛵️Most people (including us) would look at the idea of an ocean passage sailing predominantly upwind as undesirable. But the conditions we’ve been in the past few days have been what Jacqeau was designed to sail in. Her narrow and low bow cuts through the wind and her boat speed is effortlessly maintaining close to the true wind speed.

💙Sailing close-hauled these past couple of days has reminded us of when we first bought the boat and used charge up and down Narraganset Bay (Rhode Island) sailing upwind just for the pure joy of it. But today, the wind has backed, meaning that as much as we have loved our upwind sailing, nature has given us an opportunity not to tack and sail straight into Minerva Reef. Sails are cracked and we’re doing a full glamour beam reach.

⚡️The night brings some small isolated lightning clouds however we are easily able to identify them using satellite imagery, this is so reassuring with lightning as it always looks close but this one was 100nm away so we were definitely safe!

We’ve renamed this part of the world ‘The Fiji Triangle’ as our instruments have been doing some preettty freaky things recently. Our autohelm goes from working perfectly to suddenly going wildly off course and swinging us round in circles. Our chart is on the same sort of vibe - works perfectly and then will suddenly lose all data or claim that we’re either doing 1,056knts of boat speed or 0.1knts in the wrong direction. That in turn throws the true wind direction and our odometer out. On top of that our compass has gone completely out. Despite checking all electrics, re-calibrating and resetting they have decided, in true sailing fashion, to not play ball. Has that hindered us from setting off on a notoriously difficult navigational passage? Of course not.
But today we feel our luck has changed. We caught a fish! It’s been a long drought for us since our last hand caught tuna and we’ve been craving the carpaccios and poké bowls of French Polynesia. A perfect sized tuna for two was caught and we spent the morning filleting and prepping it. And after that everything seemed to fall into place - Larry the autohelm works, the chart appears to be telling the truth and we are pointing in the right direction. Could we be out of the Fiji Triangle?
What better way to celebrate than with a fresh poké bowl at sunset 🙌

🪸We are starting our trip to New Zealand by making a stop at Minerva Reef, a unique and isolated reef in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Conveniently, it provides a perfect stop for those travelling down and can break up the often arduous passage. Inconveniently, it means 412nm of upwind sailing against the trades. However, the winds are light and trending slightly higher than 90 degrees, so we set off.

🏄‍♂️We exit Fiji’s barrier reef, passing by surfers popping out of Cloudbreak’s perfect barrels, and then it’s a slow motor sail around the lee of the island. Frustratingly, both our autopilot and chart plotter are deciding intermittently not to work, even after thorough diagnostics. So we are going old school and hand-steering using the sun and stars for now.

🌄By the afternoon, the engine is off and we are sailing close-hauled (as we will be for the next 3 days). Just after sunset, it’s no surprise that we start to see the mainland of Viti Levu get lit up every so often by lightning. It had been a still, sultry day in the tropics—the perfect recipe for such weather effects at nightfall. And as we sailed south towards the islands, further flashes popped up and started dancing around us as if ‘Jacqeau’ was in fact in the middle of a dance floor rather than the ocean.

⚡️And even though it still makes us jump, we have learnt through several lightning encounters while sailing now, what poses a threat and what doesn’t. And tonight luckily, we were at low risk.

We don’t share our plans too publicly on here, as the nature of the game means that any plans you do have are often changed. Our lives are dictated by so much more than plans, and that can be equally liberating and imprisoning.

However, we’ve made a big decision recently to change our route around the world. The Cyclone season hangs over the Pacific from November through to early spring and forces sailors to escape to refuge. Our original plan was to head north, round the top of Papua New Guinea (PNG), and make our way towards Indonesia and then the Suez Canal.

This meant attempting to catch an incredibly tight weather window around the top of PNG which, if missed, would mean both current and trade winds turning against us and make for an extremely difficult passage. The chances of making it were slim to start, and the almost certain delays caused by things that all boat owners will appreciate (breakages, customs, and general boat bureaucracy) meant we pretty much had no chance. On top of that right now doesn’t feel like the safest time to go through the Red Sea so we thought we’d put that on hold.

So instead, we are heading south to New Zealand, where Will will spend their summer cruising around and making some very exciting updates to the boat. The trip down is navigationally technical; heading directly south across so many latitude lines will bring great changes in weather, requiring safe routing through weather fronts as you go between high and low-pressure systems (see slide 2 for an example of what we’re dealing with). Join us as we head down there for the next week or so…

You will always remember your first ocean passage 🌊. But trying to imagine what it will be like in advance is almost impossible! Let us help you out with a few key things:
🔵Watch System: Life revolves around your watch schedule, and this can vary significantly depending on what boat you’re on. The most standard is 3 hours on and 6 hours off, which means your watch time will be constantly rotating, and you get to experience all the different times of day on the ocean. If you’re new to ocean passages, you’ll most likely be the ‘Watch Keeper’ and be on with the ‘Watch Leader.’ Your job will be to keep an active watch visually and on the instruments, radar, and chart. You’ll also be helping with sail trim, maneuvers, and keeping the boat on course. It sounds silly, but a big part of the job is also just chatting. Keeping the convo going through a night watch is an art form—18 days into a passage—but it really does help speed time along! Get some good podcasts and audiobooks on the go as well.
🔵Seasickness: Even if you don’t get sick in coastal waters, the sustained motion of the ocean can affect anyone. Be prepared. Our favorite hack is non-drowsy anti-histamines (also watch our seasickness reel for lots of advice in the comments section). It often passes after the first 2-3 days, so remember things will get better!
🔵Embrace the Experience: You will be out of sight of land, truly alone with the ocean, the boat, and your crew. Sometimes pulling away from the over-stimulated world that we live in can make life at sea feel quite ‘boring,’ but trust us, you will look back at it with the fondest memories. Embrace the pace that the ocean sets, disconnect, and enjoy.
🔵Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: Yes, you have your watch hours, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only time you’ll be working. Be ready to jump in and help whenever needed, whether that’s a mainsail drop in the middle of the night or an exploded jar of kombucha in the galley mid-squall. Yes, you may be tired and achy, but so is everyone else, and coming together as a team in those moments is important.

Sailors have a wonderful habit of taking parts of the ocean that lie happily nameless and renaming them into far more menacing and frightening names. One such name is ‘The Dangerous Middle,’ a passage which forces the ‘milk-run’ sailors, who have just completed a relatively uneventful Pacific Ocean leg across the South Pacific to French Polynesia, to immediately shed their complacency and sharpen their focus.

The reason for its namesake is that it’s known for its extremely unsettled and unpredictable maritime conditions. Driven by the persistent presence of the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ), this volatile area causes the steady trade winds to become unreliable, often yielding sudden squalls, low-pressure systems, and strong wind shifts. It’s notorious for wildly inaccurate weather predictions, meaning you have to rely solely on reading the weather in front of you.
We’d already been treated to a delightful preview of this on our sail north from Tahiti to Raiatea, when the forecast had anticipated light and fair winds with no rain. The reality was being relentlessly poured on in a 30-knot+ thunder and lightning storm for hours on end.

We started the passage from Bora Bora rather uncomfortably where big ocean swell fought against its rebound from the surrounding islands. The wind that we needed to fill our sails and drive us through the sea state was not apparent and caused the rigging and sails to bang and jar—a shuddering sound that pains any boat owner to hear. We resorted to dropping all sails and turning on our protesting engine, making for a slow, noisy start.

The swell eventually died down and the wind filled in, allowing us to hoist all our sails and head in the right direction. Knowing that we couldn’t rely on any forecast, we felt like we would jinx things by saying it aloud, but we appeared to be having some excellent sailing. Not too fast, not too slow, everything was just right. The world record is 40 days but for most people who want to stop off and see a few parts along the way it takes 3-7 years. We met a man once who had happily been on his circumnavigation for 14years. For most people it’s a compromise between how much you want to see, how much money you have and whether you’re still fitting in work. We interchange between freelance sailing jobs and our own circumnavigation meaning for the first 3 years we took 6 months out at a time to work. Now we are planning to hit the finish line in the summer of 2027 meaning altogether it would have taken us 5 years.

We didn’t spend too much time in Bora Bora but of the time we did it is a tale of 2 halves. Sailing in is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful entrances to an island we have known. The Mount Otemanu towers above the lagoon creating a dramatic green silhouette against sky. Upon arrival two friendly reef sharks came swimming up the back of our boat to greet us – this will still never get old. We took a hike up one of the peaks and marvelled at the views (before having one of our worst drone fails see slide 7)

We did, however, have an experience that left a sour taste in our mouths.

If you want to stay in Bora Bora on your boat, pretty much the only option is to take a paid mooring buoy. There are only 2 spots which permit public anchoring, and both are too deep for our anchor chain. This is common procedure in French Polynesia as the government are doing their best to preserve the coral and doing an excellent job if it. And indeed, that is what is implied when you arrive, the mooring buoys are there to preserve the beautiful nature of the island and the money you pay for them goes towards the conservation.

We heard some rumours when we were there that allegedly this wasn’t the case, and the mooring buoys are in fact all controlled by one man who take the money personally. We still have no idea whether this is true or not, but we can tell you this. There are a few select mooring buoys on the island that belong to restaurants and given that you eat at that restaurant for the night, you can stay on the buoy for free. We had an amazing stay on one of these, we were able use their pool with the view of Jacqeau gently bobbing in the background (see slide 5) which was a pretty surreal experience. The owner was one of the friendliest people we encountered in the Society Islands, and she showed us the incredible and intricate headpieces her daughters made for months before the annual celebrations (see slide 4). Life Lately 💌 - “pinch me” moments in Fiji ❤️🌺. Despite being exactly half way across the globe, Fiji reminds us of one of our Favourite cruising grounds - Scotland. Just with a little more sunshine, a few more tropical fish and slightly warmer water. There had been so much hype about this place before we arrived that we were worried it would be a disappointment but we are so pleased to say that it is the opposite. Thriving reefs, warm friendly locals, dreamy surf and thousands of stunning anchorages. Here are just a few moments from life onboard recently that we are grateful for ✨✨✨

WHAT A DAY! 🇫🇯🤩. It happens so often in sailing that we miss out on things, the weather dictates our paths and has little consideration for our plans. So it’s completely serendipitous that we ended up in Fiji as the World Surf League Final was happening. We spent the day seeing the best of the best surf Cloudbreak. EPIC.

WHAT A DAY! 🇫🇯🤩. It happens so often in sailing that we miss out on things, the weather dictates our paths and has little consideration for our plans. So it’s completely serendipitous that we ended up in Fiji as the World Surf League Final was happening. We spent the day seeing the best of the best surf Cloudbreak. EPIC.

After 10 days of remote sailing round Fiji we decided to shift it up a bit and park right outside Cloud 9 - the legendary floating bar that sits just within Fiji’s barrier reef. A stone’s throw away from one of the world’s most famous waves, Cloudbreak, where coincidently the World Surf League finals are taking place right now. Tourists, sailors and surfers share cocktails, pizzas, sunsets and an appreciation of the ocean around us. We snuck Jacqeau in between the reef and were the only sailing boat outside - so close that there was absolutely no need to have our sound system playing. Best thing about it? As the sunset and everyone went home we swam back to the boat and were joined by turtles and clown fish. What a way to reintroduce ourselves to civilisation!

Our disco ball was one of the first things we installed. In fact it was up before the floorboards went down, the galley was put together or the rig went back in 🪩. Today, after 36 hours of thunder, lightning and rain in Fiji we started to sail south. The clouds started to part and the sun crept through at the perfect angle to bring the disco ball to life - polka dots of light dance across our salon reminding us of the most important reason of our circumnavigation, to have fun. If you’re boat hasn’t got one yet - time to make a change 🕺🕺🕺

Then we’re pretty damn excited about the next half 🤩. WE ARE OFFICIALLY HALF WAY ON OUR CIRCUMNAVIGATION 🍾🍾🍾. Even though we’ve sailed 19,000 miles already in Jacqeau, just yesterday we made it to our half way mark 🙌. The past few years have allowed us to see some of the most remarkable places on the planet, all from the comfort of our own home. We’ve sailed to locations that people would pay thousands to reach and had so many once in a lifetime time experiences. This half has seen us sail the Atlantic Ocean twice, fight for our lives in the Bermuda Triange, cross the equator, transit the Panama Canal and cross from the western to the eastern hemisphere. We’d also be lying if we didn’t say that it has been hard, boat life has daily challenges, on our patience, our relationship and our sanity but we have learnt so so much. What was meant to be a 600nm island hop turned into a full on ocean passage through what is known as “The Dangerous Middle” - an area of the Pacific Ocean where the weather is unpredictable and squalls and light wind are a regular occurrence. And despite encountering all of those things it ended up being one of our favourite passages to date. We celebrated a birthday at sea 🎉, crossed the date line 🕣 and have officially entered the Eastern Hemisphere 🙌. For the duration of our time we didn’t see a single living soul, in fact we hardly saw any wildlife either aside from this chirpy bird who came to join us one evening. The moon shone bright for most of the nights and when it didn’t we were rewarded with a brilliant night’s sky. The last two days were windy, grey and very rainy, making us feel more like we were in the UK but we have been rewarded with the jewel that is Fiji - and we are very excited 😍.

For the duration of our time we didn’t see a single living soul, in fact we hardly saw any wildlife either aside from this chirpy bird who came to join us one evening. The moon shone bright for most of the nights and when it didn’t we were rewarded with a brilliant night’s sky. The last two days were windy, grey and very rainy, making us feel more like we were in the UK but we have been rewarded with the jewel that is Fiji - and we are very excited 😍.

The great bathroom transformation 🙌 Many of you have asked to see some before and afters so here you have it - before’s, afters and a few in between. See below for detailed process:

1️⃣ Sand, prime and paint. The walls were all that slightly yellowing cream that old boats have which made the bathrooms feel dark and unclean. We went for a classic bright white and resources where limited in the small island we were on so we used outdoor fence paint which seems to have worked pretty well so far!
2️⃣. New sink bases. A huge thing for us was to change out our sinks which were definitely living in the past. We decided to cut new bases out of wood and have new porcelain sinks sit on top so we traced the surface and cut new wood.
3️⃣. Tiles - we tiled the top half of the bathrooms with peel and stick tiles. These are great for boats are they are light, waterproof and easy(ish) to install. Although up really close you can definitely tell they’re tiles we think the overall effect has come out really well.
4️⃣. New plumbing a drainage systems - new taps and showers meant new plumbing systems.
5️⃣. Varnish, varnish and varnish again till you can’t varnish anymore. All of the wood was looking pretty tired and dehydrated so this made a huge difference.
6️⃣. Install final touches, new sinks, taps, showers, curtains toilet roll holders and cleaners. On of our favourite features is our magnetic soap holders.

We’ve sought shelter in this gem of an island for a while whilst the swell is big. A narrow pass that faces south means that everything has to fall in place in order to enter safely otherwise you’re met with large waves that break across the whole pass. The elements aligned and we managed to secure our spot within the lagoon. When can we leave? That will be up to Mother Nature to decide…

Our bathrooms (or heads) were in dire need of a re-vamp. We are so happy with how they turned out, here’s a before and after of our aft heads - the en-suite to our cabin. Cutter Rig’s really split the crowd. A lot of sailors find them fussy and the running back stays that come with them all a bit too much, but for us, it was a non-negotiable on boat buying manifesto. Our old stay-sail was the original that came with the boat and had been repaired more times than we can remember. It got us through some of the toughest sails of our lives but last year the Pacific finally got the better of it as it was ripped to shreds during an offshore passage. Luckily the guys at @180sails saved our bacon and helped us design the best new sail and get it delivered out to French Polynesia.

To be honest, we’d only heard of Bora Bora as some remote honeymoon destination, and whilst there is a lot of that, when you look beyond the rows of floating beach huts the beauty of nature that lies at the beating heart of Polynesian culture is undeniable. The name, previously Pora Pora translates to “First Born” as it was believed to be the first to rise from the sea after the sacred capital of Riatea. Seen from anywhere on the island at over 2,000 feet the extinct volcano of Mount Otemanu steals the show with its jagged, lush green sides rising up to crown the island with its’ favoured name of the “Pearl of the Pacific”. And whilst we may not be in a 5 star all-inclusive resort, there is no other way we would like come to this island than how the original Polynesians did in the 4th century- by sail ⛵️.

We’re rating our recent boat projects out of 10 - what do you think? More details below ⬇️
1. ⚓️ THE ANCHOR - we had a section of VERY rusty chain that needed replacing. We cleaned out the anchor locker, got an additional 30m of chain, replaced a cracked anchor roller and re-marked the chain. Now when we pull up the anchor the fordeck doesn’t have rust stains 🙌. We have a total of 60m of chain but could have more for deep anchorages in bad weather.
2. 🛁 BATHROOMS or “heads” as boaters call them. These had a complete renovation and were so happy with how it went. Fresh paint, varnish, sinks, showers, tiles etc and much more.
3. ⛵️THE HULL we did complete new bottom paint and polished the hull. We try and do a semi-regular polish, not only does it look great but it protects the hull against the relentless salt and sun that it’s exposed to.
